Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Trees 12–16 m tall.

Stems: Bark reddish brown, fibrous on trunk and larger branches, smaller branches brownish red to gray, smooth.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Adult Alternate, juvenile leaves opposite. Blades broadly lanceolate, 7.5–11.5 cm long, 1.5–2.5 cm wide, juvenile or intermediate leaves (mostly seen on adult trees) orbiculate to cordate. Blades concolorous, glaucous, juvenile or intermediate leaves (mostly seen on adult trees) slightly discolorous, amplexicaul, glaucous. Margins entire. Petioles flattened, 5–11 mm long, juvenile or intermediate leaves (mostly seen on adult trees) sessile. Stipules vestigial or absent.

Flowers: Flowers 3 in axillary, simple umbels, peduncles 2–6 mm long, pedicels absent. buds fusiform, glaucous, 5–7 mm long, 4–5 mm wide. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic. Calyx modified into an operculum; operculum conical. Stamens numerous, in several whorls; anthers dithecal. Ovary inferior; ovule placentation axile.

Fruit: Fruit obconical to hemispherical; 5–8 mm long; 5–9 mm wide; valves 3–5; slightly exserted. Seeds numerous.

Ploidy: 2n = 22

Habitat: Planted and occurring sporadically on Kaua'i and Hawai'i.
